Arriving in Zurich and heading to Milan for a few days, or vice versa. It's obvious that you've looked for train options, and it is reasonable, but it's not always the right answer. This guide will help you choose the best travel options to go to and from Zurich. Choose whatever works well for you, and what to expect from the moment you arrive.
Zurich from Milan is approximately 280 kilometres. It takes around 3 hours and 27 minutes in normal traffic conditions. The main route runs south from Zurich on the A3, picks up the A2 through the Gotthard Road Tunnel, then continues through Bellinzona and Lugano before crossing into Italy and joining the A9 motorway down into Milan. The whole journey is very beautiful, even on the motorway.
This is the question most people are asking before they book, so let's look at it directly.

If speed is your priority, then go for trains, but if comfort, safety, and reliability are your priority, go for a private transfer from Zurich airport. The private Zurich to Milan transfer wins for families, groups, anyone with substantial luggage, and anyone starting or ending outside Zurich.
Switzerland doesn't come under the European Union, so you cross a proper border when you leave Switzerland and enter Italy. Most people are surprised to learn this after assuming the journey would be seamless.
The private chauffeur assigned to you goes on this route regularly. For most EU and EEA passport holders, the border crossing adds 10 to 20 minutes. Non-EU travellers should make sure their documents are in order. Occasionally, especially during peak summer periods, the queue at the Swiss–Italian border near Chiasso can be longer. Your driver will know if this is likely and may suggest an earlier departure or an alternate crossing.

A lot of people doing this trip are actually connecting through Zurich. People land at ZRH and want to get to Milan without the hassle of taking a train, dragging bags through Zurich HB, and then sitting on another train for three and a half hours.
The private limousine transfer works slightly differently in that your chauffeur meets you in the arrivals hall with a name board. Flight tracking means that if your inbound flight is running late, the driver adjusts automatically. From Zurich Airport to central Milan, you're generally looking at around four hours, depending on traffic and the border.
If you're not in a hurry and travelling between roughly late May and October, enquire about travelling on the Gotthard Pass rather than the tunnel. This leads you over the top of the Alps, through one of the most spectacular mountain roads in Europe. It takes a while longer, perhaps an additional 45 minutes to an hour, but if you have never driven across the Gotthard, it's worth it! Narrow switchbacks, stone walls, countryside views around the entire route — quite an experience from the motorway tunnel.
In our experience, there are a few types of travellers. Families that have gone through the experience of doing the train with luggage and small children and have sworn never again. Business travellers who must make calls or prepare for meetings on the way — the car is private, quiet, and all yours. Groups of three or more, and the cost per person becomes quite competitive with individual tickets for the train! Or anyone with an extremely early morning or late night travel requirement for which the train simply isn't running.
How long does the drive from Zurich to Milan take?
The time is typically 3.5 to 4.5 hours, depending on traffic and actual pick-up and drop-off locations, plus time at the border. We will give you an accurate estimate, not the ideal GPS estimate. Contact us to know more.
Do I need to show my passport at the border?
Yes. Unlike its neighbours, Switzerland is not part of the EU's Schengen Area; there is a proper border crossing between Switzerland and Italy. Have your passport ready. EU citizens pass through generally quickly. Any requirements for non-EU travellers to enter Italy should be checked before travel.
Can I book a return trip — Milan back to Zurich?
Absolutely. Reserve it on the same day as your outbound Zurich to Milan transfer, and we will arrange for it. The return runs the same way: it picks you up at your address in Milan and drops you at your address in Zurich or at the airport.
What vehicle will I be in?
This will vary with group size. Most couples and small groups come in a sedan (usually a Mercedes E-Class). Families or groups with more luggage ride in a Business Van (Mercedes V-Class). Larger groups can be accommodated in our Sprinter. Select at the time of booking.
Can I stop somewhere along the way?
Yes. Lugano is a popular destination because it is on the way, and if you haven't been there, it takes 30-40 minutes. Please simply let us know when you make a booking, and we will take it into account in our schedules.
